BVDV PREVENTION: A THREE-PRONGED APPROACH

Your veterinarian can help design a BVD prevention program that’s tailored to the risks of your operation. Most programs will include three prevention strategies.

1

IDENTIFY AND ELIMINATE PI CALVES

  • Calves should be tested before 60 days of age
  • Positive calves should be culled or isolated from the herd
  • Dams of positive calves should be tested as well
2

PREVENT EXPOSURE WITH GOOD BIOSECURITY

  • Maintain a closed herd
  • Buy only from certified BVD-free herds
  • Quarantine newly purchased cattle from the rest of the herd for several weeks
3

ENHANCE IMMUNITY

  • Select vaccines that are labeled to protect against BVDV subtypes in your area
  • Naïve heifers and cows should be vaccinated pre-breeding
  • Bulls should be vaccinated as well
  • After initial calf vaccinations, cattle should receive annual booster vaccinations
  • Pyramid 5® + Presponse® SQ and Express® FP are the first vaccines labeled to protect against BVDV Type 1b
